01 The brief

Tomorrowland is one of the world’s largest electronic music festivals. Since its first edition in Boom, Belgium in 2005, it has grown to four countries, with each year built around a new fantasy theme. Its butterfly mark changes with every theme. It’s recognisable, but there’s no system holding it together across locations and editions. Next to EDC’s neon carnival and Coachella’s relaxed open-air warmth, Tomorrowland owns fantasy and narrative.

02 The idea

The identity is built on the festival’s own motto. Each phrase becomes a form. Organic petals stand for life, two figures held close for love, and two arches rising from a shared base for unity.

03 Exploration

Early exploration abstracted the butterfly into stars and contained marks. Tutorial feedback moved the work past containers, which limit a mark as a pattern, toward forms that carry meaning. Of three concepts, the petal, arch and star mark expresses the motto most clearly and references the original butterfly.

04 Mark and type

The arches are drawn from the curves of the Aesthetic letterforms, and the star is the same star that sits in the wordmark’s O’s. Mark and type read as one identity, resolving the disconnect in the original.

05 The system

Both patterns are built directly from the mark, so every element carries the identity on its own. Linen and Midnight form a neutral base that lets each location’s colour lead. Geist’s clean geometry balances the ornamental wordmark.

06 In use

The lineup poster brings the full system to the Consciencia theme, with Cormorant Upright for the title. At billboard scale, the wordmark and the Belgium location colour carry the identity on their own.

Outcome

A consistent identity that works across four locations and every yearly theme. The mark, wordmark and patterns work together or alone, giving Tomorrowland a foundation each theme builds on rather than replaces.
